Laptop sales generate Q3 profit for H-P

Boosted by strong laptop and international sales, Hewlett-Packard Co. on Tuesday reported third-quarter net income of $2 billion, or 80 cents a share, up from $1.8 billion, or 66 cents a share in the same period last year.
Palo Alto-based H-P (NYSE:HPQ) had $28 billion in revenue, up 10 percent from the year-ago's $25.4 billion. Excluding items, the company's income would have been 86 cents a share.
Analysts expected, on average, earnings of 83 cents a share on $27.4 billion in revenue.
Looking ahead, the company said it expects $30.2 billion to $30.3 billion revenue in the fourth quarter, with earnings of 95 cents to 97 cents a share.
H-P is a major employer in the Sacramento region, with a 3,000 employee facility in Roseville.
